Bag a Barra — 11 August 2023

Barefoot Fishing Safaris is where you should go when you go to the Top End to go fishing, but this week we're talking about water crossings, and we're talking about these blokes who took a four-wheel drive into Darwin Harbour and drove underwater for 7 kilometres and Watty was on the banks with a great northern can in his hand, cheering them on. What do g'day?

G'day duck. Yeah, actually, was going to head down there, but they were running pretty late. They got bogged a heap of times, so they ran a bit late, but the party was fairly cranking, but by the time they did arrive, they crossed Darwin Harbour in an old 70 series land cruiser, which they converted to drive electrically, 7 kilometres up to 20 metres underwater. I think, um, got bogged along the way, caught some barrow along the way.

as they're emerging out of the ocean. They got Barris swinging around in the air and stuff. It was a huge party and it was actually the 40th anniversary to the day of the previous attempt, which one of the divers, old man, was one of the original divers as well. So a bit of history involved as well, which is pretty awesome.

Unbelievable. Really? to think they went 7 kilometres underwater. They filmed all this, didn't they?

Yeah, it was live streamed. I watched it from home. I was getting ready for fishing and it was live streamed. You could see them driving along there, sitting in the car, and then they'd get bogged and they'd have to get some airbags down, pump them up a bit, and then off they'd go again.

It was a, it was a hell of an effort. It's a world record for the longest and the deepest car drive or whatever you would call it. Um, and also a world record for catching a Barramundi from a moving vehicle. I believe was another one.

It wouldn't be too hard to win that record because often people would try it. No, that's right. So were these scuba divers, these blokes, obviously. and they've had a bit of fun of being territorians.

I mean, only in the northern territory. Oh, absolutely. And it got a fair bit of coverage all around the world, and you can jump on ABC Tales from the Tinny Facebook page and check out a heap of the photos, interviews and stuff from it. There's a, yeah, absolutely classic territory thing to do and um, yeah, I think uh, they'll be, they'll be holding that record for a long time.
